The dolphins come in to be fed every day by local rangers who supervise the tourists who flock to see the wild dolphins when they come into the shallows.
Monkey Mia is located 800 kilometers north of Perth, Western Australia. The sheltered waters of the bay provide excellent conditions for the resident bottlenose dolphin population.
The small town of Monkey Mia is fringed by a Marine Park which reflects its status as a place rich with sea life. Monkey Mia was formerly a pearling port but now the dolphin-related and general tourist infrastructure is the main reason why people visit the town. In its own right, without the dolphins, the area is a beautiful seaside setting.
Monkey Mia got the name from Mia the Aboriginal term for home or shelter. The Monkey part of the name is allegedly derived from a pearling boat called Monkey that anchored at the now Monkey Mia in the late 19th century, during the days when pearling was an industry in the region.
