Flinders Ranges
Tour to Flinders Ranges
Ikara-Flinders Ranges National park is on Adnyamathanha Country.
The scenery in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia (north of Adelaide and south of Lake Eyre) are a classic representation of Australia’s outback.
The arid landscape of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park is covered in hardy gum trees, dried-up creek beds, and eroded hillsides that change color in the morning and evening light. You can climb to the lookout points on the hills and survey the majestic surrounds, the wide-open spaces the homes of kangaroos and cockatoos. It’s an epic landscape and place to be.
The eroded gorges reflect the flood, drought, and flood cycle over the millennia that have taken to carve the landscape. It’s a landscape that has also been inhabited by an Aboriginal population who have left significant rock carvings and named its significant landforms.
Iconic places to visit include Wilpena Pound and Dutchman’s Stern in the Southern area of these ranges. Dutchman’s Stern is a fantastic hike with a rewarding lookout. Wilpena Pound, also known as Ikara, meaning “meeting place” is a natural amphitheater of mountains.
The Adnyamathanha people are traditional owners of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park.
