Itinerary

Lake St. Clair and Western Wilds
Departing Hobart we travel West on this tour day, heading straight towards the magnificent wilderness. Our drive takes us alongside Tasmania’s Hydro-Electric history giving us a bird’s eye view of some massive man-made feats of human engineering! We stop along the way in the quirky village of Tarraleah for some great views from the local lookout.
Our scenic drive takes us onwards to Lake St. Clair where we explore Australia’s deepest lake. We have time here to enjoy a series of short walks exploring the forests and wild rivers of this area. Alternatively, you can relax by the lake, enjoy the scenery, indulge in some photography and take in the spectacular setting.
After our Lake St. Clair experience, we continue driving west and enter the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers, National Park. The scenery here is breathtaking as we are surrounded by the Tasmanian world-heritage wilderness.
The Franklin River Nature Trail is one of Tasmania’s “60 Great Short Walks”. It is a beautiful trail of temperate rainforest running along 2 wild rivers. The Franklin River is most famous for its wild beauty, epic water rafting, and the fascinating piece of Australian political history that played out on the river, our Guide will share these great stories with you along the way.
Then it’s onwards to Donaghy’s Hill Lookout Walk. Bring your camera as this walk has a not-to-be-missed epic view from the top! A short uphill hike (around 30 minutes) takes us to the Wilderness Lookout where we have 360 degree views. Mountain ranges, wild rivers, forests, button grass plains, 30,000 years of Tasmanian Aboriginal history – as far as the eye can see. A stunning and awe-inspiring view of one of the world’s greatest wilderness areas that survives today. This is a humbling and inspiring place to stand taking in our surroundings.
“The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area offers all people, for all time, the opportunity to seek joy and inspiration amidst the untrammeled grandeur of nature, and refuge from an increasingly artificial world. It is waiting for you to discover it, and, perhaps, discover a part of yourself.” – www.parks.tas.gov.au
We retrace our steps and begin the return trip to Hobart. After a full day out west, we arrive back to Hobart around 6.30 – 7.00pm.
