The K’Gari Fraser Island 4wd adventure was a trip of a lifetime. Our incredible guide Hana showed us the island that holds her heart and shared Dreamtime stories from the Butchulla people who have been the guardians of K’Gari for 40,000 years.. From the tea tree oil infused Lake Allom to paddle-boarding on the crystal blue waters of Lake Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), our group of 20 backpackers from all over the world had a blast. We stayed in beautiful lodgings at Eurong Beach Retreat, where 6 shared a hostel style room and communal style meals, which helped us bond over the weekend. The food was healthy, delicious and bountiful so we had lots of food to fuel us through the action packed days. Everyone in the group had the opportunity to drive the 4wd trucks on the 75 mile beach and in the bush, bumping along secluded gravel roads while singing karaoke. Even though it was a short trip we packed a lot in, including the Champagne Pools, beautiful rock pools at the north end of the beach, and sand-boarding on the sand dunes. K’Gari is a natural wonder, as it is the largest sand island in the world, even though it boasts rainforests! All in all, I had an amazing weekend, met incredible people and was shown the beauty of K’Gari by a passionate guide who is invested in sustainable ecotourism so we can protect the island for future generations.
