Tour Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles)
The beehive-like striped rock domes of the Bungle Bungles Range in the World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park is a mysterious and iconic place deep within the remote Kimberley region of northwest Australia.
The stripes are caused by bacteria feeding on the different sedimentary layers of rock that make up the domes or towers. The dome shapes are the result of rain and wind weathering the rock over thousands of years.
The Bungle Bungles are one of the main reasons you would visit this northern region of Western Australia. Just getting there is an achievement. You'll travel more than 50km from the Gibb River Road along a rough 4WD track to see the domes. This fragile area is immense in size. Access is limited to only a small part of the park.
Cathedral Gorge is a highlight when visiting the Bungle Bungles. This cathedral-like grotto, carved by water pouring off the sides of the domes is immense in size. You'll be dwarfed by the size of the space and awed by your experience of this landscape.
A walk into the narrow Echidna Chasm is to experience the forces that are constantly eroding the landscape here. The narrow slot is home to a variety of very specific plants.
Many people take a helicopter flight over the park since this is the easiest way to see the size of the area easily and quickly. In 2018 on our 8 day Broome to Darwin tour and Broome to Broome tour we are including a scenic flight over the Bungle Bungles. Landing into Purnululu National Park where you can explore Echidna Chasm and Cathedral Gorge by foot.
When the sun goes down and you watch the rich red sunset change the colors of the Bungle Bungles rock at twilight, you will understand what a special and unique place this is.
