Arnhem Land

Visit the wonder of Arnhem Land

Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia is a remote and relatively less travelled part of the country. Unless you have a special permit you can only reach this area with an accredited tour company.

Arnhem Land is around 500km distance from Darwin, so easier to access on a multi-day tour. Starting the day from Jabiru in Kakadu National Park prevents such a long drive from Darwin to get into Arnhem land.

The expansive Arnhem Land area covers about 34,000 square kilometres. The estimated population is around 16,000, It is estimated 12,000 are Yolngu, the traditional owners. It is one of the largest aboriginal reserves in Australia, traditional traditions are still upheld by many of the ingenious people who live there.

The weather is similar to that of Kakadu National Park and most of the Top End with a monsoon season and a dry season.

Highlights of the area include visiting the Injalak Hill rock art site, one of the most impressive around, to learn about the local dreaming stories and and art with a local Aboriginal guide. Arnhem Land is well known for the Aboriginal Rock Art that can be found in abundance.

A visit to the Injalak Art Centre brings a contemporary perspective to the living art of the area.
